Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT), created by Steven C. Hayes, challenges the notion that negative emotions must be fixed or managed. Instead, ACT encourages individuals to accept their thoughts and feelings rather than resist them. It employs mindfulness techniques to help people experience emotions without judgment, suppression, or avoidance, while staying grounded in the present moment. By accepting thoughts, feelings, or unchangeable circumstances, individuals can clear the path to move forwards in life. ACT guides the path to moving forwards by supporting the development of a sense of Self through steering people towards actions that align with their personal values. ACT aims to shift the focus from negative emotions to meaningful, committed actions through goal setting and actionable steps. Ultimately, ACT enhances psychological flexibility, enabling people to handle challenges like stress, chronic pain, anxiety, depression, and other factors that impact their quality of life.
