Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who can benefit from counselling?
Counselling is generally sought out by people who feel stuck in challenging situations or are experiencing overwhelming emotional states that impact their daily lives. It can be helpful for specific issues like anxiety, stress, trauma, grief, relationship challenges, family dynamics, work concerns or health issues, as well as for those looking to enhance their personal growth, self-awareness and resilience. The counselling space provides an opportunity to explore deeper aspects of yourself which can lead to a shift in mindset and a sense of liberation. Ultimately anyone who desires support and growth in their mental health and emotional well-being can benefit from counselling. If you are unsure whether you would benefit from counselling do reach out. I offer a 15-minute free video call so you can decide whether counselling is right for you.
  • What is the difference between a counsellor, a psychologist and a psychiatrist?
Counsellors and psychologists are very similar in the theories and therapy techniques we use, but a key distinction lies in their focus: Psychology often focuses on a diagnostic model while counselling focuses on the emotional impact on a person's life. Counsellors generally don't diagnose but do regularly deal with people who have been diagnosed or are experiencing signs, symptoms or behaviors associated with various of common psychological disorders and conditions. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who diagnose and treat mental health issues with an emphasis on biological factors and medication.
  • How long are your sessions?
Sessions can be 60, 75 or 90 minutes long. We can decide on what is the best session length for you depending on what feels needed for your case and scheduling needs.
  • How long does counselling last?
Counselling can last from a few sessions to several years. I offer both short-term goal-oriented processes and longer in-depth processes focused on personal growth and positive life changes. If you have any wishes regarding the duration of your counselling journey, please let me know, and I will work to structure a suitable plan.
  • How can I change or cancel an appointment?
Appointments can be changed or cancelled by WhatsApp, Email or phone up to 24 hours before the session start. If the cancellation occurs within 24 hours of the session the fee will apply. However, in cases of emergencies or sickness it can be waived.
  • Does insurance cover?
I cannot provide direct billing to insurance. However, your insurance may permit you to submit a claim if you present an invoice depending on the specifics of your mental health coverage.
  • How can I pay?
You can pay in cash, by cheque, by FPS/bank transfer or PayMe
  • What age groups do you work with?
I provide services to adults and adolescents aged 16 and older. While I do not directly work with children, I offer support to parents and can accommodate joint sessions if it would be helpful in addressing parenting concerns.
  • What can I expect in a first session?
In the first session we get to know each other. I get to understand more about the challenges that brought you to counselling and you get a further sense of how I work with clients. We discuss your goals and what you would like to achieve from your sessions and at the end of the session we can both decide whether it makes sense to move forwards.
  • Will what I tell you be kept confidential?
Absolutely. All information shared during counselling sessions is kept strictly confidential, except in situations where there is risk to yourself or others, or in legal circumstances where I would be required by law to disclose information. I follow the ethical guidelines of the Australian Counselling Association.
