Solution-Focused Therapy

Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) is a brief, goal-oriented method created by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg. This approach incorporates principles from positive psychology, emphasizing solutions in the present and future instead of dwelling on past issues and traumas. The foundational idea of SFT is that individuals possess the ability to enact positive changes in their lives, with the counsellor helping to identify their strengths and resources to collaboratively develop sustainable solutions. By exploring moments in a person's narrative where they successfully navigated past challenges, these strengths are uncovered. Goal setting, rooted in a person's best hopes for the future, is a key component of SFT, guiding the therapeutic process. Overall SFT aims to foster empowerment and cultivate a positive mindset.
