Somatic Therapies

Somatic approaches work with the mind-body connection. Pioneers like Peter Levine and Pat Ogden have significantly influenced this field, with contributions from many others. Stress and trauma have a myriad of physical manifestations and experiences - both positive and negative - are stored at a cellular level. The somatic approaches address an individual's emotional and physical issues by using the body as a starting point and seeing the person as a whole. Somatic techniques can include breath work, movement, grounding, mindfulness and awareness of bodily sensations and the felt sense to release stored emotions and improve emotional regulation and resilience. Creating a sense of safety within the body is crucial, and gentle guiding towards inner and outer resources leads to empowerment. These approaches are particularly helpful for individuals who experienced trauma pre-verbally or for whom talking about their trauma is re-traumatizing.
